Fun Leung Kwok passed away peacefully on September 17, 2024 at the grand age of 100 years old. He was surrounded by his loving grandsons and their families. Fun was born the oldest child of several siblings in Shantou, China and was fortunate enough to receive some elementary education to read and write at a school run by Catholic missionaries. When Japan invaded, he fled south to Hong Kong to escape the war.. After the war, he reunited with some of his family in his hometown, got married, and had his son.
Later, he returned to Hong Kong and learned how to make eyeglass frames. He worked his way up and eventually owned and operated a factory of his own, which was one of the few factories making eyeglass frames in Hong Kong. While in Hong Kong, he raised a daughter, who moved to America after college and got married. He sold his business and he and his wife also moved to America to help their daughter raise her new family.
It wasn't easy moving to a land where they didn't understand the language, couldn't work, and couldn't drive to places. But he and his wife were loving parents and grandparents, so they helped their family in any possible way. Fun would walk his grandsons to and from school, take care of house chores, and watch the grandsons while their parents worked.
He was a practical man who enjoyed working with his hands and loved working in the yard. He planted Chinese vegetables and herbs, so his wife could cook familiar Chinese dishes. At home, he always tinkered and MacGuyver-ed things to improve the home and the yard. He built a shed, built a covered garden, enclosed the back porch, and did numerous home improvement projects from painting to laying down tile. He enjoyed drinking hot tea and had a fondness for sweets. He loved going to dimsum with his family to eat some of his favorite foods. After his grandsons grew up, his daughter would take him out on many cruises and trips together.
As he got older, he suffered from dementia, but luckily was functional and manageable with modern medicine. He lived with dementia for 7 years and lived to see his great-grandchildren.
Fun Kwok is survived by his son Kin Shing Kwok, his grandchildren and their spouses - Mandy Pui Chung Kwok, Cathy Pui Ka Kwok, Scotty Chun Ho Kwok, Darrick and Angie Lee, and Jonathan and Michelle Lee; and his six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Yuk Bing Ng; his siblings in China; and his only daughter, Selina Lee.
