G. James "Jim" Purdy, Jr., of Davidsonville, Maryland, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2025, at the age of 79, surrounded by his loving family. A proud Naval Aviator and veteran, Jim served his country with distinction and lived a life marked by passion, talent, and an unwavering zest for living.
Born on April 21, 1945, Jim's early years were defined by his skill and determination as a wrestler, qualities that would shape his character throughout his life. During his time in the Navy, he discovered a love for rugby, often taking the field as a tenacious scrum half. After retiring from the Navy, Jim pursued a master's degree in Sports Facilities Management from George Washington University, laying the foundation for a successful entrepreneurial career. He founded Pinnacle Sports and Pinnacle Parking, where he managed the 4,000-space parking lot at the Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium for 17 years. This role perfectly suited his boundless energy, deep love of sports, and enduring commitment to the Navy's mission.
At home, Jim's kitchen was his sanctuary. He delighted in crafting gourmet meals for family and friends, each dish a testament to his generous spirit. His table was a place of warmth, connection, and cherished memories. Jim's enthusiasm extended far beyond the kitchen-he was an avid pilot, a world traveler, a volunteer wrestling coach at the Naval Academy, and a fisherman who treasured outings with college friends. He could often be found shopping at local Davidsonville farms, seeking the freshest ingredients to elevate his culinary creations. A voracious reader and dedicated father, Jim was actively involved in his children's lives, coaching Little League and supporting their Girl Scout and Boy Scout adventures.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Mary (Hamilton) Purdy, whom he married on March 30, 1973. He passed away the day after their anniversary, a poignant testament to their enduring bond. He also leaves behind his daughter, Elsbeth of Washington, DC, and son, James of Brooklyn, NY, as well as his sister, Diane Meyers, and brother, Robert "Pete" Purdy. Jim was predeceased by his parents, George James Purdy, Sr., and Hazel Irene Reich.
A man of boundless vitality, Jim will be remembered for his robust days soaring through the skies, exploring the world, and nurturing those around him with his infectious enthusiasm. He will be laid to rest in the columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery, a fitting tribute to his service and legacy. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to a charity of your choice.
