G. Lynwood Stephenson Obituary
G. Lynwood Stephenson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great
grandfather and friend, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, December 18, 2023. Lynwood
was a friend to all and a joyful presence to all.
Lynwood was born on June 8, 1932 in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina to the late William and
Mavis Stephenson. He grew up in Wilmington North Carolina and graduated from New Hanover
High School. After graduation, Lynwood joined the Army and served for eight years. He is a
veteran of the Korean war during which he served in Army intelligence. After his service in the
Army, he began his career in manufacturing. He was most recently Vice President of Ace
Sportswear, a large-scale manufacturer of sportswear in Fayetteville NC. He is remembered by
his many employees and customers.
Lynwood was an active member of Lake Lynn Baptist Church for over many years and shared
many special times with his loving church family. Lynwood was a devoted Christian and knew
that he would be with the Lord after death. It is reassuring to know that Lynnwood is spending
Christmas with Christ.
Having played for almost 50 years, Lynwood loved the fellowship (and competition!) of playing
golf. He played numerous courses all across the United States.
He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Mildred Strickland Stephenson, his five children,
Steve Stephenson and wife Mary, Denise S. O'Dell and her husband Karl, Bruce Stephenson and
wife JoAnne, Robin Ellington and her husband Jimmy, Scott Stephenson and his wife Michelle, "bonus daughter" Pat Talkington,
nine Grandchildren, Angie Stephenson, Sara Stephenson, Dakota Stephenson, Vincent Lynch,
Tabitha Stephenson, Timothy Canady, Stephen Canady, Krista Thomas, Brandon Stephenson as
well as eleven Great Grandchildren.
He touched many lives, radiated warmth and love; never met a stranger, had a joy for life and for
helping others. He had a big laugh and was one of the most kind-hearted people you could meet.
A memorial service will be held 3:00 PM, Saturday, December 23, 2023 at Lake Lynn Baptist
Church with Judd Dixon officiating. Family members will remain in the church social hall after
the service for visitation.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Lake Lynn Baptist Church, 3363
Gillespie Street, Fayetteville, NC 28306.
