Gail Hymowitz Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bruce C. Van Arsdale Funeral Home on Jan. 20, 2026.
Gail Hymowitz, 84, passed away January 19, 2026.

Gail was born and raised in Brooklyn to the late Louis and Rose Miller. She moved to New Jersey in 1965 and settled in Union where she raised her family until 2003. Gail then lived in Somerset, NJ before heading to Florida in 2012 to retire in the warmth. Gail was employed as a Comptometer Operator in Greenwich Village, NYC. She met her husband Marty at a Jewish singles dance in Brooklyn in January of 1964 and married him in January of 1965.

Gail was a lifetime member of Hadassah, ORT (Organization for Rehabilitation through Training), and Sisterhood of Temple Ohev Shalom, Colonia, NJ. She was active in the Township of Union School District PTA. Gail loved traveling to NYC, playing Canasta, Maj Jong, Dominos - Mexican Train and Poker. She was an avid exerciser her whole life. She was walking for fitness before walking was "cool" - she walked so fast, she may have even invented speed walking! In the late 1960's, early 1970's she used to exercise along with Jack LaLanne when he hosted The Jack Lalanne show on TV! She loved to host family dinners - large and small - whether it was Thanksgiving for 30, break fast for her friends or Shabbat dinner for her family. She was an excellent cook - "Gail's" Brisket, "Gail's" Sweet and Sour Meatballs and "Gail's" Mushroom Barley are favorites of many far and wide. She was an avid reader her whole life, you never saw her without a book. When she lost her vision and could not read anymore, she listened to books on tape for hours on end. She must have listened to 1,000 books in the last two years. She is remembered fondly by her family and friends, of which some friendships spanned 60 years.

Her greatest joys were her children, grandchildren and great grandson! She enjoyed all of her grandchildren's band concerts, dance recitals and sporting events (even if she didn't know what was going on). She traveled all over to attend their B'nai Mitzvahs, High School and College Graduations and most recently she traveled to California for the marriage of her grandson. She never wanted to miss a thing. She loved her furry family members too - Coco and Bandit and her furry granddogs - Vicky, Pugsley, Brutus, Mort and Mel.

She is predeceased by her brother Leonard Miller and son in law Warren Lubliner.

Surviving is her loving husband of 61 years, Martin Hymowitz, daughter Deborah Lubliner of Bridgewater, NJ, Michele Wilensky (husband Paul) of Boynton Beach, FL and Marc Hymowitz (wife Nicole) of Springfield, NJ, sibling Arthur Miller (wife Gail), Brother in-laws and Sister in-laws, Betty Stein, Norman and Artie Hymowitz, Steve Schmidt, grandchildren Jason Wilensky (wife Becca), Joshua Wilensky, Meredith Lubliner, Theodore Lubliner, Charlotte Hymowitz, and great grandson Isaac Alexander Wilensky.

Funeral services will be 12 noon Tuesday, January 27, 2026 at Bruce C. Van Arsdale Funeral Home, 111 North Gaston Ave., Somerville, followed by burial at King Solomon Cemetery in Clifton.
