Gail Thom Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Symonds-Madison Funeral Home on Dec. 31, 2025.
Gail Ann Thom, age 78, of Elgin, IL, passed away on December 28, 2025. She was born August 29, 1947 in Chicago, IL to her loving parents, Kenneth and Dorothy (née Meins) Johnson.

Gail graduated from Carl Schurz High School in 1965 and carried her warmth, humor, and creativity with her throughout her life.

She met the love of her life, Bill, in a storybook twist-through the Jewel where Bill happened to report to Gail's mother, his future mother-in-law. That connection blossomed into a loving marriage of 42 years, marked by laughter, mutual respect, and deep companionship.

Gail was known for her fun and caring nature. She had a passion for sewing, crochet, and shopping-especially when it meant picking out something special for someone she loved. But her greatest joy came from being a grandmother. Affectionately nicknamed "Stinky," she embraced the name with pride, always showing up and staying as long as needed to support and care for her family. Her unwavering presence and selfless heart made her a cornerstone of her loved ones' lives.

Family gatherings were never quite complete without Gail's signature rendition of her favorite song, "Gray Squirrel," a performance delivered with the same joy and humor that defined her personality.

She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and devotion that will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. Gail's spirit was one-of-a-kind, and her memory will continue to bring smiles, just as she always did in life.

Gail was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, William Thom. She is survived by her daughters, Penelope (David) Suydam and Nancy (Michael) Buechner; sister, Donna Johnson; grandchildren, Hope Buechner, Michael Buechner, and Joshua Suydam; cousins, Deb Jahnke, Sandee Schlickman, and Ruth Baker; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 5:00pm to 9:00pm, with funeral service at 7:00pm, Monday, January 5, 2026, at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park Street, Elgin, IL 60120. Pr. Noah Kegley will be officiating.

Interment will be at 11:00am, Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at Acacia Park Cemetery, 7800 Irving Park Road, Norridge, IL 60706.

Yesterday

We are so sorry to hear about Gail´s passing. We have been long time friends with Gail and bill as Gail stood up in our wedding. I remember the time when Gail and I went out to get our first Christmas tree. We found this stick of a tree and we just stood over it and had a good laugh. We shared many memories with our families in sister bay Wisconsin and remember being in the sister bay´s annual parade with the hats that bill had made.
Our family has many memories of Gail and we send our sincerest condolences to her family.
With Love
