Obituary published on Legacy.com by Anthony Funeral & Cremation Chapels - Brighton/Rochester Chapel on Mar. 10, 2026.
Our beloved Gar passed on March 8, 2026 in the comfort of his home after his long journey with Parkinson's and MS.
Gar was predeceased by his parents, Charles (Chet) and Ruth Lowenguth, his brother, Bruce and sister-in-law, Barbara, his brother-in-law, Ken Wild and great-nephew, Liam.
A proud Rochesterian, Gar was born on July 15, 1946, at St. Mary's Hospital. He spent his childhood growing up on Birr Street and attending Sacred Heart and Aquinas, and, as a proud alumnus, they continued to hold a special place in his heart. After graduating from Geneseo College, Gar returned to his neighborhood, where he devoted 11 years to teaching history at Marshall High School. Gar left a lasting, positive impact on the lives of countless students, and to this day, many of them continue to express their gratitude. He often received cards, calls, and heartfelt messages from former students who cherished the influence he had on their lives. When once asked why he thought so many of his former students and colleagues remembered him so fondly, Gar simply replied, "I cared."
Gar was very involved in his community. During the early 70's he worked to rally residents in the historic Park Avenue/East Avenue area to participate in neighborhood improvements and redevelopment. In the 90's he co-chaired a fund raiser for GEVA to promote and raise funds for the theatre. He sponsored and participated in several House and Garden tours for the Landmark Society of Western NY and the Rochester Garden Club, and he served on the Preservation Board for the City of Rochester.
Gar's love of history, architecture and Rochester eventually led to a career in real estate where in the early 1980's he started Lowenguth Realty LLC. The company logo, a pineapple, symbolizing hospitality, became a frequent sight especially in the East/Park Avenue area. Over the next 40 years, Gar worked with numerous agents as their broker and earned the trust of countless clients who valued his extensive knowledge of properties and his expert negotiating skills. Gar was a visionary with a keen eye for potential in a property. As a result, he became a sought-after advisor by local developers eager to create housing projects. His personal residences were known for being rescued and restored to their historical grandeur through meticulous care and attention to detail.
Gar always saw the best in others and gave the best of himself. His work was thorough, his standards were high, his style was classic and impeccable, his closets were legendary, his wit and humor were charming and disarming. His legacy as a dedicated and beloved educator, a passionate cheerleader for Rochester and a highly regarded real estate broker will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Gar was a champion and protector of those he loved. He leaves behind his beloved wife and partner of 38 years, Cindy, his sister, Candy Wild, many nieces and nephews, especially his goddaughter, Kristin, and loyal friends. The family wishes to thank all those who found the time to visit, call, send cards, prayers and messages of concern and care. These expressions of love meant the world to Gar and his family.
A very special thank you to all the healthcare providers from Rochester Regional Health who helped with Gar's care. Their compassion, support and professionalism were exemplary. A special thank you to Gar's nephew, David Charles, who patiently and tenderly cared for him for over two years.
A private burial will take place at the family's convenience at Mt. Hope Cemetery. If you wish to honor Gar, donations may be made to the University of Rochester's Department of Neurology, c/o Advancement Office, 300 East River Road, P.O. Box 278996,
