Garry Lee Hockenberry, 77, passed on to his heavenly home February 6, 2024, in his Amberson residence surrounded by his loving family. He was the cherished husband of Patricia (Elter) Hockenberry.
Garry was born July 5, 1946, in Carlisle, a son of the late Harry Cleveland and Nellie Carolyn (Strayer)Hockenberry. He graduated from Shippensburg High School in 1964 and the following December enlisted in the United States Air Force. Stationed in Germany, he served 4 years during the Vietnam War and received numerous commendations when honorably discharged. Garry had a career of many years of service at Letterkenny Army Depot retiring as a supervisor.
He was a member of American Legion Post 232, Spring Run, where he served as Past Commander and adjutant. Garry was proud of his many awards from LEAD, had perfect attendance and was on the Swat Team. He was also a member of the Letterkenny Rod & Gun Club. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, and fishing. Going to a Penn State Whiteout game was one of his favorite memories. His family remembers him as a loving family man, hardworking, enjoying a beer and a hoot with his friends and the fact that he never seemed to meet a stranger but soon had another best friend.
Surviving with his loving wife, Patricia, are his children, Danny Cook (Tiffany) of Coral Springs, FL, Michelle Stouffer (Andy) of Orrstown, Lori Cook (Lynn) of Chambersburg, Jamie Thrush (Brian) of Shippensburg and Cory Hockenberry (Shannon) of Chambersburg and 11 grandchildren: Ashley, Megan, Brittany, Joshua, Viktoria, Lindsay, Brandon, Trevor, Blake, Brianna and Trenton John and 10 great grandchildren. Also surviving are 4 sisters, Hazel Garman, Esther Failor and Jeanette Adams all of Carlisle and Linda Varner of Shippensburg and 2 brothers, Donald Hockenberry of Chambersburg and Freddie Hockenberry (Brenda) of Shippensburg. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Heckman, a brother Galen Hockenberry and a granddaughter, Megan Cook.
