Gary Allison Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by O'Brien-Sullivan Funeral Home on Mar. 3, 2026.
Gary Everett Allison, of Novi, Michigan, passed away on Friday, February 13, 2026, after a brief hospitalization following a fall at home.

Gary was born on February 9, 1948, in Detroit, Michigan, to Jim and Marilyn Allison. He grew up in the Detroit area, attending Catholic school before graduating from Cooley High School. As a teenager, he enjoyed working on and being around drag cars, racetracks, and races - a passion that reflected his lifelong love of engines and adventure.

Gary joined the U.S. Army in 1967, serving in South Korea before volunteering for Vietnam, where he completed two tours of duty from 1968 to 1970. During his service, he served as a crew chief on a Huey helicopter. Fondly known as "Sgt. Huey," Gary bonded instantly with fellow veterans and often said, "If you knew one veteran, you knew them all."

In civilian life, Gary worked as a systems engineer for much of his career. He was employed by Ingersoll-Rand and other manufacturers before concluding his professional career with Ford Motor Company.

Gary will be remembered as a true and trusted friend by all who knew him, with a keen wit and a compassionate sense of humor. An avid backpacker in his younger years and later an enthusiastic RV camper, Gary explored nature around the world. He especially enjoyed nature photography during his ventures into wild areas. Music was a constant joy throughout his life, and in later years he also enjoyed playing pool.

Gary is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years, Jackie (née Jacqueline Walker). He often joked that he was "the oldest of a litter of seven," referring to his brothers and sisters. He is also survived by numerous extended family members on both his side of the family and Jackie's.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
