Gary Atkins Obituary

Gary Hazlitt Atkins

Gary Hazlitt Atkins of Auburn, NY, passed away peacefully on February 10 at the age of 91, surrounded by the love of his family. Born in 1934, Gary lived a life defined by service, loyalty, and quiet strength.

Drafted into the U.S. Army as a young man, he proudly served his country before beginning a long and dedicated career in corrections, retiring as a captain in 1992. His commitment to serving others continued for decades at Watkins Glen International Raceway, where he was a familiar and trusted presence as a Paddock Marshal and Flagger, and often helped run the track for private racing events.

Gary had a passion for the outdoors and adventure. An avid skier, he volunteered as an EMT with the National Ski Patrol, offering help and reassurance to those in need on the slopes. He was also a devoted Kiwanis member for more than 30 years, including time as a past president, giving back to his community in countless ways. Later in life, he discovered a new love in scuba diving, embracing the excitement of exploring a whole new world beneath the surface.

At home, Gary was a craftsman and creator. He took great pride in woodworking by making numerous pieces of furniture for his granddaughters, tackling home projects, and traveling with his family. He truly enjoyed the years he spent dressing up and volunteering at the infamous Dracula's Haunted Mansion around Halloween throughout the 80s. He was also well known for elaborate Christmas light displays that became a beloved tradition, reflecting both his playful spirit and his joy in bringing happiness to others.

Above all, Gary was a family man. He was a devoted husband of 68 years to his wife, Sandra, and an extraordinarily loving father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Sandra; six children, Gary "Scott" Atkins, Linda Russell (Barry), Lori Gower (Terry), Leanne Maniscalco (David), Lisa Mosher, and Steven Atkins (Kimberly); and nine grandchildren, Jessica Mosher, Christopher Mosher, Josh Gower, Amanda Matt (Eric), Nicole Bear, Cody Russell, Brandon Maniscalco, Amelia Atkins, and Adalyn Atkins. His steady guidance, warm sense of humor, and unwavering love will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those who knew him.

A celebration of Gary's life and interment will be held around the Fourth of July, with details to be announced by the family at a later date. Memorial contributions in his honor may be made to the National Ski Patrol or a charity of your choice. The family warmly welcomes memories and condolences from all who knew and loved him.
