Gary Stephen Austin age 60 of Sylva NC, went to go be with the Lord on March 14, 2024. He was born to Flora (Queen) and Clarence Austin of Jackson County, on April 9, 1963. Gary Stephen Austin known as Steve, Big Foot or Six Mil, enjoyed playing his guitar and grilling for his loved ones. Fishing, hunting, and camping were Steve's favorite hobbies. He was known for his "word of the day" among other jokes and pranks. Steve was a devoted truck driver for over 45 years. He loved his daughter and former wife. 
He will be dearly missed by his daughter, Jessica Austin and her spouse, Stephen James Poe; previous wife and best friend, Jo Ann (Ward) Austin; brother, David Austin; sisters, Kaye Austin, Brenda Nicholson and Rachel Jordan; many nieces and nephews; best friends, Adam Page of Adams Towing and Tracey Henson; and many other family members and friends.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ottis Austin and James Austin; and his favorite dogs, Happy Jack and Bootz.

The family will receive friends from 2:00PM – 3:00PM on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at Appalachian Funeral Services, Sylva NC., with a Funeral Service at 3:00PM. Rev. Harry Steele, officiating. Interment will follow at Ward Cemetery, Whittier, NC.. 

Pallbearers: Adam Page, Ricky King, Matthew Hanneth, Kelly Dendy, Greg Blanton, Tracy Henson, & Sam Swayngim.
