Gary Bishop
1954 - 2026
Gary Wayne Bishop, age 71, of
Grand Rapids, Minnesota, passed away Monday, January 19, 2026, at home peacefully surrounded by family. He was born in 1954 in Grand Rapids to Wayne and Evelyn Bishop, where he spent his entire life building a life defined by hard work, family, and a deep joy for the outdoors.
Gary's strong work ethic began at a young age with a paper route-where he even learned how to drive-and continued throughout his long career at the Blandin Paper Company, where he worked as a machine tender. Known affectionately by many at the mill as "Buff," Gary was deeply respected for his dedication and pride in his work.
An avid skier, Gary's love for the slopes shaped some of the most meaningful moments of his life. He downhill skied, water-skied, and served as a ski instructor at Sugar Hills-where he met the love of his life and future bride, Cindy. His passion for water skiing was legendary; so much so that he spent hours on the water skiing the very morning of his wedding, much to his bride's dismay. Gary also loved all things fast, from the many cars he owned over the years to his especially well-known and beloved Carlson speed boat, which perfectly reflected his adventurous spirit.
Gary and Cindy built a beautiful life together and raised two children, Eric and Ashley, who were the greatest joys of his life. In time, Gary poured his heart and hands into another dream: building the family log cabin on Lake Vermilion. He spent countless hours pouring everything he had into making it just right for family and friend gatherings, creating a place filled with laughter, connection, and lasting memories. The log cabin became a treasured gathering place and a source of immense pride, filled with memories of summers and winters spent snowmobiling, pontooning, water skiing, playing card games, and enjoying the simple routines he loved most-moments that will be cherished forever.
Gary also loved his time in Mexico with friends and family, where he was known for his ability to strike up a conversation with anyone at the pool bar-often while drinking cervezas, soaking in the sunshine, and gazing out at the ocean.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Evelyn Bishop.
Gary is survived by his wife of 38 years, Cynthia Bishop; daughter Ashley (Matt Carriere) Bishop; son Eric (Kali) Bishop; two sisters, Gail (Ted) Johnson and Lynne (Butch) Beier; many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly; and his grandpuppy, Hazel.
