Lt. Deputy Gary Leon Brooks, Wewoka resident, passed away on Thursday, August 21, 2025 in Oklahoma City at the age of 56. Gary was born on July 14, 1969 in Seminole, OK to Avery Leon and Roberta Virginia (Lane) Brooks. He grew up in the Seminole and Maud area and was a graduate of Maud High School. Gary married Tammy Blackwell on October 26, 2020 in Seminole, OK.
Gary started his law enforcement career at Wewoka Police Department as a reserve peace officer and worked himself into a full-time officer. He joined Seminole County Sheriffs Office on June 22, 2009. Gary enjoyed giving advice to new officers as well as giving them a hard time to break them in. He enjoyed helping others and was always going the extra mile to make sure that the people he loved were taken care of, as well as helping strangers in need. Gary had a sense of humor that would help with even the worst of situations. He was recognized in 2020 as Deputy of The Year. Gary will be greatly missed by the entire law enforcement community as well as everyone who knew him. In his free time he enjoyed fishing, hunting and making fishing lures. Gary was a loving family man who enjoyed providing for and spending time with his family.
Gary is survived by his wife, Tammy Brooks of the home; two sons, Matthew Brooks and Jayden Herndon of Wewoka; daughter, Courtney Brooks of Moore; sisters and brother-in-law, Sherry and Tim Akins of Seminole, Karen Foster of Seminole and Leanne Brooks of Seminole and many other family and friends.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Avery and Roberta Brooks and son, Marcus Brooks.
A celebration of Gary’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 29, 2025 at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole, OK with Chaplain Sam Ketcher officiating.
