Gary Burge, 82, of North Liberty, passed away on July 1, 2025 at the University of Iowa Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

Gary was born on August 26, 1942 in Morning Sun, Iowa to Lee "Gerald" and Susie (Thompson) Burge. After graduating high school, Gary worked at Sears while attending Burlington Community College. On April 19, 1963 he married Carlyne Samuels and to this union three children were born.
Gary proudly served in the United States Air Force for three years nine months and 17 days if you were counting (and he was), obtaining the rank of E4. Upon discharge he obtained his bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa. He was employed by the University of Iowa for almost 40 years; working with Dr. Van Allen in Physics and Astronomy, also working in the Weeg Computing Center where he was privileged to work with Dr. Weeg, He then worked at the audio/visual center, and planned many consortiums for that department. Ending his working tenure as an administrative accountant for University of Iowa and U of I Hospital. He retired in 2004.
In his spare time, Gary could be found fishing, playing a round of golf with his buddies or cheering on the Iowa Hawkeye basketball program and working as a Press Liaison for the Hawkeye football home games. He enjoyed a good (hard to find by his thoughts) casino and endless rounds of cribbage or other card games. Time spent doing community work was some of Gary's favorite days. During his retirement he worked at the auditor's office during elections, was a lifetime member of Alpha Kappa Psi and was a member of the Iowa Girl's High School Athletic Union and the Iowa Boy's High School Athletic Association for over 35 years. Gary belonged to the Izaak Walton League and was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Gary is survived by his beloved wife, Carlyne; children: Juli (Damon) Thompson, Cara Brandenberg and Marc Burge; grandchildren: Reid (Cory) Todd, Kyla (Christian) Farris, Trev Brandenberg and Jace Brandenberg as well as one great granddaughter, Tinley Todd. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Nancy Burge and his aunt Nana Tomson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Veteran's Honor Flight; an endeavor that Gary was blessed to be included on a few years ago.
