Gary Lee Byers, 69, passed away Saturday, July 16, 2022, at his home in Yakima. Gary was born January 30, 1953, in Soap Lake, WA, the oldest son of six children, born to Howard and Lucille Byers. He grew up in Quincy, Washington and Othello, Washington, and graduated from Othello High School in 1971.
Gary was proud to have been a volunteer firefighter for Adams County Fire District #5 in Othello, starting in high school. In 1983, his firetruck rolled on the way back to the station after a call, and Gary was permanently disabled, including severe breaks to his neck, back, and one leg. After several months of recuperating in the hospital, Gary returned to his fire house and began to serve in a dispatch and training capacity. Gary retired in 2009, and moved to Yakima, to be closer to his family.
Gary is survived by two sisters, Jean (Archie) Tweedie, of Port Townsend, Washington and Joyce Hill, of Yakima, two brothers, Gale Byers of Warden, Washington and Gerald (Carri) Byers of Yakima, his children, Sheryl and Jennifer, along with several grandchildren, three nieces, Naomi (David) Mahn of McMinnville, Oregon, Chereé (Ryan) Dennison, of Yakima, and Keli (Jake) Byers Morey, of Elkridge, Maryland, and one nephew, Kevin (Rebecca) Byers, of Seattle. Gary is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Gail Byers, and his nephew, Sean Byers.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, July 22, 2022 at 10:00am at Brookside Funeral Home (500 W Prospect Rd, Moxee, WA).
In lieu of flowers, donations made to Othello Fire Department (Adams County Fire District #5), or your local fire department, can be sent in care of Brookside Funeral Home (PO Box 1267, Moxee, WA 98936), who is caring for the family.
