Dr Gary Martin Ciuba, of Greene Township died on Saturday November 9, 2024 at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Boardman due to complications arising from treatment for atypical CML.
Born on January 15,1956 in Elizabeth, New Jersey to Walter and Anne (Pielech) Ciuba, Gary grew up in Linden, NJ. He was valedictorian of the Class of 1973 at Roselle Catholic High School and also the valedictorian of the Class of 1977 at Seton Hall University. He continued his education at Fordham University where he was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa.
Upon completion of his doctorate Gary was welcomed onto the faculty of Kent State University - Trumbull Regional Campus. Highly respected among his colleagues and considered a mentor to younger faculty, he rose to the rank of Full Professor during his 38 year career at the university, retiring on May 31, 2024.
Gary was the author of three books: Walker Percy Books of Revelation; Desire, Violence, and Dignity in Modern Southern Fiction; and South of Deafness: Deafness and Modern Fiction of the Us South to be published by the University of Mississippi Press in November 2025. His second book won a national award for excellence in literary criticism.
Gary served on several community boards and also served on national boards involving Southern literature. He was a lector at Blessed Sacrament Church for many years and always did what he could do to help others in a quiet unassuming manner.
For all of his professional achievements Gary walked humbly through life. One would never know how accomplished and brilliant he was. Gary took the greatest satisfaction from being a husband, father, and Avo (grandfather).
Gary met Patricia Rogan when both were teaching at Mother Seton Regional High School in Clark, NJ. Their friendship grew into love and they married on May 21, 1994. They enjoyed 30 years of marriage centered on God's will for their lives. They grew their family by adopting 3 pair of siblings in. The boys were all school aged at the time of their adoption from Brazil and have now created successful careers and families of their own.
Gary is survived by Patricia, his 6 sons and their wives/girlfriends and children. Junio and Trista are the parents of Tanner and Tegan. Giovane and Krystal are the parents of Ethan, Milena, and Eliana. Thiago and Alyssa are the parents of Owen, Marissa, Oliver, and Evan. Joao is the father of Camila, Avia, and Zelia. Jonathan and April, and Andre and Lauren Bush are aunts and uncles to all. He is also survived by his brothers, Reverend German Ciuba of Youngstown and Mark Ciuba of Linden NJ along with Patricia's cousin Margaret Mary Conway, his sister in law Deborah Rogan, and numerous
cousins scattered throughout the country.
Predeceasing Gary were his parents, Patricia's parents: Jack and Agnes Rogan, his brother in law, John Rogan Jr., and his beloved Godmother Aunt Julie Suchadolski.
Calling hours will be Friday November 15 at the Peter Rossi and Son Memorial Chapel, 1884 North Road NE, from 2-4 and 6-8. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish - Blessed Sacrament Church, 3020 Reeves Road NE
Warren, OH 44483 on Saturday November 16 at 11am. Family and friends can meet at the funeral home at 10 am to process to the church. Burial will be in All Souls Cemetery.
