Gary Cooper passed away on December 16, 2025, at the age of 79, at his home on the farm where he was born. He was the son of the late Walter and Pauline Cooper. Gary graduated from Southern Garrett County High School in 1964. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for Buffalo Coal Company. He enjoyed many outdoor activities including hiking, cross country skiing, camping, and cutting firewood. He liked reading and playing board games. Spending time with his children and grandchildren brought him much joy.
Gary is survived by his wife of 60 years, June; a son Gary Cooper Jr. and wife Heather, a daughter Julie and husband Greg Iden; five grandchildren, Ivy Lynn and husband Adam Opel, Madison Cooper and fiancé Andrew Miller, Quinn Iden and fiancé Regina Roberts, Ian Cooper, and Rylee Iden; and one great granddaughter Della Opel.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Larry and Bradley and his sister Melanie.
Friends will be received on Friday, December 19, 2025, at Fairview Covenant Brethren Church, 1101 Fairview Church Road, Oakland, MD 21550, from 11 AM to 12 PM. A funeral service will be held in the church at 12 PM, with Pastor Sam Moon and Ronald Gordon officiating. Interment will follow at the Fairview Cemetery.
