Gary Grant Dauel passed away peacefully at the age of 91, surrounded by his loving family, on December 12, 2025, in Callaway, Nebraska. He was a cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Gary was born in
Malmo, Nebraska, on August 28, 1934. He was the eldest of three children born to Clara E. and Clarence P. Dauel. He spent his early childhood on the family farm in Malmo. When he was in high school, his father moved the family to Loveland, Colorado, to ranch. Gary graduated from Loveland High School and shortly thereafter enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Wilhoite. During a leave in the Port of Seattle, Washington, he met a beautiful Canadian named Margaret (Peggy) Arwick, who captured his heart. After a whirlwind romance, they married and were stationed in Hawaii.
After serving nearly five years in the Navy, he and Peggy settled in Loveland to raise their family. In 1963, they moved to Fort Collins, Colorado with their two toddler daughters and welcomed a son. Unfortunately, their marriage ended in 1971. He then met and married Elaine Darveau, with whom he shared four children. They moved to Arkansas and later to
Gothenburg, Nebraska. Their marriage ended after 10 years.
Gary attended technical trade school and held various jobs throughout his lifetime. He was known for his strong work ethic and integrity. For over 13 years, he proudly worked for Poudre Valley Creamery in Fort Collins. Gary was a skilled individual who could excel at any task he set his mind to, including working at Valley Irrigation and the Pit Stop station fueling irrigation pivots, as well as the local grain mill in Gothenburg. However, in 2002, he was forced to retire due to a massive heart attack.
He possessed a lively sense of humor, coupled with a stubborn streak. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, and during his early years, he developed a love for fishing and camping in local lakes and streams. Gary had a fondness for birds and kept Cockatiels as his faithful companions for many years. He also took pleasure in feeding and observing wild birds. His creativity knew no bounds; he had a knack for fixing anything and everything, as well as designing and developing gadgets. Gary also enjoyed tinkering with cars and appliances, finding joy in working with his hands. Gardening was another one of his passions, with his orchids being a source of pride and joy. As a longtime coin collector, he always made sure to check your change before you left his home. However, his true love was woodworking. He was a master craftsman, able to transform a simple piece of wood into a stunning and intricate work of art. His legacy includes a multitude of beautifully handcrafted wooden creations.
Gary's unwavering love for his family and his dedication to living life to the fullest were evident throughout his life. His children were the recipients of his immense love and sacrifices, and they will forever be grateful for all that he gave them. As a proud grandfather, his grandchildren held a special place in his heart.
Gary is survived by his children: Barbara Pursley (Ken), Melissa Haddock (Harry), daughter-in-law Rhonda Dauel, Chrystal Preitauer (Terry), Jonathon Dauel (Tonna), Trina Jo, and Annmarie Paulsen (Lawrence). He also leaves behind 22 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. His sister, Carolyn Walter, and three nephews also survive him.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, his younger brother Peter Dauel, his eldest son Robert Dauel, and his granddaughter Kristina Allen.
