Gary John Eder died peacefully at Benedictine Living Community in Ellendale, North Dakota on Oct. 23, 2024, at the age of 72. Gary was born Nov. 19, 1951, to Gladys Dionne and Bert P. Eder in Poplar, Montana. He was a registered member of the Fort Peck Assiniboine Sioux Tribes. He graduated high school from the St. Labre Indian School in Ashland, Montana. After an adventurous time hitchhiking around the West with his brother Pat, he enlisted in the Marine Corp. Unfortunately, he developed schizophrenia there. The VA managed his care after that. He lived on his own, in group homes, and in care facilities. The dedicated staff at the Benedictine Living Community provided a caring environment for many years. He was very happy there. Gary loved playing cards, helping others, and pulling pranks. Gary was very proud that he’d quit smoking but still craved a cigarette. He was always grateful for others care, especially his guardians Annette and Tony. Gary is survived by his step-mother, Jo Ann Eder, and by his siblings Gail Stafford, Bert P. Eder, Jr., Sunshine Prince, Glenn Eder, Galen Eder, and Mark Eder and their families in Red Lodge, Montana. He was preceded in death by his birth mother, his father, Bert P. Eder, and by siblings Gregory Eder, Gloria Eich, and Georgianna Patton. Gary’s family is grateful for the kindness and care of the staff of the Benedictine Living Community, the Red River Valley Hospice and to Fr. Patrick Parks. They made Gary’s life comfortable and enjoyable. Mass of Christian burial will be 2pm November 19, 2024 at Benedictine Living Community, Ellendale with Fr. Patrick Parks officiating. The service will be live-streamed here on Gary’s obituary page. Arrangements by Hoven Funeral Chapel, Ellendale.
