Obituary published on Legacy.com by Harvey Anderson & Johnson Funeral Homes - Willmar on Jan. 11, 2026.
Gary Esboldt passed away January 10, 2026, after his long journey of compromised health, outliving the expectations of many doctors by years. Gary was a St. Paul boy, born to Melvin and Gen Esboldt. He was an all-star high school athlete in baseball and basketball and continued playing throughout his time at Luther College.
Gary started his coaching career at Reinbeck High School (Iowa) and continued coaching at South Dakota State, St. Olaf College, and Northfield High School, until he heard God's calling into the ministry. He served as a pastor at Emmaus Baptist Church in Northfield, MN until the family's move to
Willmar, MN, in 1996, where he served at Refuge Church (First Baptist) until retirement. He continued his love of coaching through his childrens' teams and camps.
Gary lived his life loving the Lord with all his heart, soul and mind. He followed Jesus' example by loving others and doing all for the Glory of God. He was a coach and leader at heart. A great listener, he was known for the questions he asked– some might call it interrogation. He loved being "papa" to his grandkids, spending time with his family, gardening, baking, reading, following his favorite sports teams, and exercising when his body allowed. Early in their marriage, Gary and Susie developed a passion for supporting others in their marriages. Through this commitment, they designed and facilitated multiple marriage conferences, retreats, and speaking engagements.
Gary's love is carried on by Susie, his "bride," a name which he continued to use to introduce her, 45 years into their marriage. He loved her daily and intensely unless she beat him in a card game. The man was competitive. His love is also carried on by his 4 children and their families. Luke and Stacy Esboldt, Hunter, Alexis; Joy Esboldt and Christian Dewey, Avery; Sam and Sara Esboldt, Blair, Kobe, Booker; Nathan and Alex Esboldt. Other family members include his sister Carol (Bill) Ecton, brother Craig Esboldt, and nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, January 14th, 4:00-6:00 pm at the Harvey Anderson Funeral Home (
Willmar, MN). A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 15th, at 2:00 pm at Refuge Church (
Willmar, MN). The family invites you to join them in their casual attire, including your favorite sports apparel.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to take loved ones to a ballgame. Memorials can be directed to Fellowship of Christian Athletes or the Humboldt Hawks, as he was an avid supporter of his kids' pursuits until his last words.
Gary's service will be live-streamed on Refuge Church's YouTube page ( https://youtube.com/live/68Px9YFZ1ZU?feature=share)
