Gary Gallwas Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Funeral Alternatives of Washington - Tumwater on Dec. 4, 2025.
Gary Gallwas passed away at home surrounded by family at 7:45 p.m. on November 29. He was 82. He started life in Tacoma Washington, the only son of Ed and Alice Gallwas, and was deeply loved. He spent his life being kind to every person he encountered.

He loved playing baseball with his friends at Peck Field and was a member of the1963 champion Mason Middle School Football Team. After graduating from Stadium High School in 1963, he enlisted in the Coast Guard and was based in Savannah GA, where he met his wife, Regina, of 57 years. They married and returned to Tacoma. Their son, Jason, was born in 1974. Gary graduated from University of Puget Sound and had a Masters and an ABD of Political Science at the UW. He worked for the WA State Employment Security Department and loved the work he did as a public servant and the people he worked with.

After retiring from Employment Security, he volunteered to deliver food for Meals on Wheels and made many dear friends. He loved listening to and playing music all his days. He loved golf and was competitive his whole life. Gary lived life to the fullest and with optimism. His garden was where his heart thrived, but above all he loved his wife and son with a dedication that will be missed.

A memorial service is planned for late summer.

Gary was a true public servant. He was a good friend, a good manager. And a good person. His contributions to the state through his work at Employment Security will continue long into the future.

Gary was terrific to work with at ESD. Not only was he a creative problem solver, he was great with people. That smile came from the legit inner light of a man grounded in a love of life and kindness to those around him. Though his loss is of course deeply felt by his family....what a gift of time you all had together. Kathy BF

To my dear friend Gary,
A soul I held close to my heart.
You were outgoing, full of life, and carried a positive appreciation for every moment you were given. Your joy, your presence, and your spirit touched everyone around you.

Your legacy continues in the lives you brightened, the laughter you shared, and the kindness you showed so effortlessly. I will miss you deeply, especially our conversations every six weeks when I had the privilege of seeing you and Regina (love you both).
Thank you for your unending support and friendship. To have known you for 25 years has been such an honor.

Until we meet again,
Kim Brown

Gary led with authenticity, integrity, and kindness.
He was curious about others.
Hope their best memories of Gary will help Regina and Jason through this challenging time of acceptance.

Rest easy my friend. You were a model of service, a loyal friend and a pretty good golfer. You will not be forgotten. I hold you in my heart with gratitude for what you did for me. Love to Regina and Jason.
