Gary Wayne Hakala, aka “Hak the Cat,” 72, born on September 3rd, 1953, passed away unexpectedly on January 22nd, 2026, at his home in Waukegan, IL.
Gary, a class of 1971 graduate from Waukegan East High School, worked at the Illinois Department of Transportation as a truck driver. Gary had a wonderful sense of humor and an infectious laugh that would bring a smile to anyone’s face. He enjoyed watching the Chicago Bears and listening to music. Gary was particularly proud of the time he spent coaching his boys’ youth baseball team when residing in Beach Park.
Gary is survived by his sons Eric and Ian Hakala, six loving grandchildren, 4 beautiful great grandchildren, his sister Kim Zeller (Rick), as well as his nephews, cousins, and many great friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Wayne, and his mother, Ruth Hakala.
Gary will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him.
