Gary D. Harris, 80, of Sonora, Kentucky, (formerly of Louisville) passed away peacefully into the arms of the lord on March 4, 2025, after a long battle with Lupus, Parkinson's Syndrome and many other illnesses. Gary was an employee of General Electric for 18 years. He was the youngest of 9 children born in Harlan County, Kentucky to a coal miner and a stay-at-home mother. When his father was killed, he and 3 of his brothers were placed in Glendale Children's Home and Spring Meadows Children Home. He left Glendale when he was 13 and went to live with his sister and her family. At 17, he joined the Army and served in Korea and Germany.
In the 1970's he started a Karate School in Jeffersontown with Paul Newton. He was active in the sport until he was disabled by a stroke in 1984. He was a member of Suburban Masonic Lodge and Carlisle Ave. Baptist Church.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 58 years, Linda (Schroerlucke) Harris; daughters, Laura Trotter (Rusty), Debbie Jaggers (Hardy) and bonus daughter, Cheryl Fischer (Mark); 5 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.
Gary loved music, growing in his faith surrounded by his Sunday School class, all things karate, and especially his family.
The service will be on Friday, March 7, 2025, at 11:00 AM. The visitation will be on Thursday, from 4:00-8:00 PM at Owen Funeral Home, 5317 Dixie Hwy., with interment at Hillcrest Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to Lupus Foundation of America, Inc. in Gary's honor.
