Gary Hatcher Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Valley Memorial Funeral Chapel - Lamar on Dec. 24, 2025.
Gary Lee Hatcher, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2025, in Syracuse, Kansas, at the age of 90. Born on March 26, 1935, in Dodge City, Kansas, to Elwyn and Hattie (Pittman) Hatcher, Gary was a man whose life was richly woven with love, dedication, and unwavering commitment to his family and community.

Gary grew up in Coolidge, Kansas, where he attended school until its closure. He completed his high school education at Holly High School in Holly, Colorado, graduating in 1953. His early years were characterized by a deep-rooted connection to the land and a strong work ethic, values instilled in him by his upbringing.

On February 2, 1957, Gary was united in marriage to Peggy (Moyer) Hatcher. Together, they welcomed three children, Robbin, Bart, and Treg into their lives. The family initially moved to California, where Gary began to establish his career. However, after the passing of his brother-in-law in 1959, Gary and Peggy made the heartfelt decision to return to Hamilton County to help with the family farm and ranch. In addition to farming and ranching, Gary had a passion for driving trucks, a profession he embraced until health challenges made it difficult for him to continue.
Gary was a people person, the more people that he was around, the happier he was. His love of horses and team roping was always at the top of his list. Each one of Gary's children and grandchildren has followed in his footsteps, whether it was farming, ranching, driving a truck, or roping and riding horses. Gary's contributions to the community extended beyond his work; he served on the Soil Conservation Board, the International Cowboy Feedlot Association, and the SECO Co-op Board, reflecting his commitment to the agricultural community and sustainable practices.

Gary is survived by his son, Treg (Karey) Hatcher of Syracuse, Kansas; daughter, Robbin Verser of Syracuse, Kansas; sister, Sandy (Wilbur) Ellis of Holly, Colorado; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He leaves behind a legacy of love and strength that will be cherished by his many relatives and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Bart Hatcher; and brother, Darrell Hatcher.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 3, 2026 at the Syracuse Cemetery in Syracuse, Kansas with Pastor Kathy Leathers officiating. Per Gary's request, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation.

Memorial contributions may be made to Syracuse Saddle Club in care of Valley Memorial Funeral Chapel, P.O. Box 950, Lamar, Colorado, 81052.
