Gary Hendry Obituary

Gary Leon McBride Hendry passed away peacefully on January 5, 2026, just three weeks shy of his 91st birthday, at a hospital in Murray due to pneumonia. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Gary was born on January 27, 1935, in Wellsville, Utah, the first child of Leon Allen and Neta McBride Hendry. He grew up in Wellsville alongside his siblings Dennis, MaryAnn, Dorothy, Michael, and Scott. From a young age, Gary learned the value of hard work - helping on the family farm, working in beet fields, hauling hay, milking cows, and participating in 4-H for many years.

He attended Floradell Elementary, Wellsville Junior High, and South Cache High School, and later graduated from Utah State University with a degree in Dairy Science. Gary also served honorably in the United States Army, leaving service with the rank of Captain.

In 1959, Gary began his career at Thiokol, where he worked for 40 years, retiring in 1999 as Lab Manager over Strategic Operations, all while continuing to work on the family farm. It was at Thiokol that he met the love of his life, Deanne Heslop. They were married on December 11, 1959, in the Logan LDS Temple.

Together, Gary and Deanne raised four children: Lori Lundberg (Gary) of Logan, Mark Hendry (Lori) of Layton, Toni Pearce (Matt) of Logan, and Jason Hendry (Cassie) of Wellsville. They are the proud grandparents of 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Gary was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He lovingly cared for his wife throughout their marriage and did everything he could to make her happy. His children always knew they could depend on him - he was steady, supportive, and endlessly willing to help. Gary set a powerful example through his kindness, compassion, dependability, and tireless work ethic. He was also a lot of fun. Known affectionately as "MacGyver," he could fix just about anything. Even the grandchildren would say, "Let's take it to Grandpa - he can fix it!"

Gary was rarely seen sitting still. He worked constantly and generously, always helping family, friends, and neighbors. It was often said that he accomplished more in a single day than most people do in a week.

A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gary served in many callings, including Counselor in the Bishopric, High Council member, Stake President's Executive Secretary, and Regional Representative's Executive Secretary. He also served the community as Wellsville City Recorder for many years, was active in the Lions Club, and contributed countless hours building floats and fair booths for Wellsville City.

Gary took great pride in his beautiful yard and abundant garden, frequently sharing its harvest with family and neighbors. He was also a prolific journal writer, carefully recording weekly events and memories. His family treasures 45 three-ring binders filled with his personal history - a priceless legacy that continues to bring comfort.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Neta Hendry; his brother, Dennis; and his sister, MaryAnn.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Deanne; all of his children and their spouses; and all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday, January 12, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Wellsville Stake Center, 30 S. Center Street, Wellsville.
