Gary Alan Hier-Winooski
Gary A. Hier passed away September 3, 2024. He was born in Vergennes, VT on March 24, 1942, the son of Lloyd M. and Lillian J. Hier.
After graduating from Pittsford High School, Pittsford, VT Gary enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. When he left the Marine Corps, he was a Captain selected for Major. In 1970 Gary moved to California to pursue a degree in Accounting and in the process met Betty. They were married in 1976, traveled a little and returned to VT to raise their five kids.
Gary retired from accounting in 2019 and became a self-employed courier. This enabled him to pursue his love of golf, which he never lost. Gary enjoyed spending time with the family, playing golf, fishing, learning the game of "beer pong" and "corn hole"...both of which he became an expert. He thoroughly enjoyed passing his vast knowledge of so many things, especially sports on to his kids and anyone who would listen! He always had a story to tell and he will be missed by many.
Gary is survived by his wife Betty; his children: Laura Hier (Dave Lavigne), Kristin Webster (Aaron), Ryan Hier (Jessica) and Kelli Pike (Seth); his grandchildren: Harlow Hier, Kaitlin Lavigne, Michael Webster, Carson Hier, Sidney Pike and Kodi Pike; his sisters Joyce Errecart and Marsha Henry; his brothers Bruce Hier and Curt Hier; his nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his son Gary A Hier II, his sisters Gail Ashley and Sally Lyons; and his brother Lloyd Hier.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, September 20, at 1:00pm at the American Legion Club Post 91 in Colchester, VT.
