Gary Harold Hughes, devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2026, at the age of 91. He was born in Sandy, Utah, on September 28, 1934, to Harold and Cleone Hughes.

Gary met and married the love of his life, Norlene Green, with whom he shared a lifetime of love, partnership, and unwavering devotion. They recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary, a milestone that reflected the depth of their commitment and the beautiful life they built together. Gary is survived by Norlene and their five children: Randy (Jana), Ronda, Ryan (Jane), Rachelle (Al), and Michael (Mindy). He was a proud grandfather to 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense joy.

Gary served in many capacities within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and dedicated much of his life to serving others. He had a compassionate heart for those in need and was always looking for quiet ways to help and lift the people around him. He enjoyed meeting new people and building friendships wherever he went.

Gary's work ethic was extraordinary. While attending school, he worked two full-time jobs, ultimately earning an accounting degree, an MBA, and a PhD—a remarkable achievement that reflected his determination and drive. He served honorably in the United States Army at Fort Lewis, Washington, and later built a distinguished career that included time at Kennecott Copper and many years as Associate Vice President for Health Sciences at the University of Utah.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Gary lived life with a spirit of adventure. He loved the outdoors, cherished travel, and found special joy in the islands of Hawaii, which he visited close to 100 times—always working on the perfect tan. He created cherished family traditions, including annual trips to Newport Beach and Grand Teton National Park, memories that will continue to bind his family together for generations.

Gary also loved to walk and stayed active throughout his life, even completing multiple marathons. His family affectionately nicknamed him “The Tiger” for his fierce determination, resilience, and willpower—qualities that defined him in everything he did.

Gary will be remembered for his kindness, humor, adventurous spirit, and unwavering devotion to his family. His life was full, his love was deep, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Vaughn and Michael; and his grandchildren Alexy Hughes Marchant and Gracey Hughes. He is survived by his siblings Bill, Kent, Dave, Deanne, Sharon, and Janice, all of whom were an important part of his life and memories.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 7th at Anderson & Goff Mortuary, 11859 South 700 East, Draper with a viewing from 10:00 to 10:45 AM followed by the funeral at 11:00 AM. Interment will take place at Bluffdale City Cemetery, 14229 S. Redwood Rd., Bluffdale.
