Newcomer Cremations, Funerals, & Receptions - Kettering ChapelGary S. Johnson, born on February 21, 1947, in Flemingsburg, Kentucky, passed away on January 20, 2026. He lived a life filled with rich experiences and diverse career paths, making indelible marks in each of his endeavors. Throughout his life, Gary shared his knowledge as a Photography teacher at Wright State University. However, it was during his time at H & E Armoring Co. that he found his greatest passion, contributing to research and development where he helped design and manufacture armored vehicles.
Gary's academic journey began at West Carrollton High School, followed by earning his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Wright State University. His dedication to learning never waned, matching his varied interests and talents.
A man with a vibrant personality, Gary had an enduring love for classic cars and was known for his extensive love for art and reading, particularly in automotive literature, as well as spiritual texts and books centered on the Civil War. His musical talents shone through his skill with the steel guitar and many other instruments. He harbored a lifelong passion for music. Gary never met a stranger. He loved talking with everyone he met and had a wonderful sense of humor.
Gary is survived by his fiancée, Susan R. Baker; daughter, Rebecca (Bill) Silkworth ; son, Robert (Ashley) Johnson; three sisters, Dana (Bill) Pant, Jamie (Walter) Letner, and Sharon (Raymond) Sacilotto; step-daughter, Laura (John) Stanley; four grandchildren, Camden Johnson, Frannie Silkworth, Zaley Silkworth and Bentley Bell, many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends who cherished him. Not to mention, his three dogs that loved him dearly. Especially his little Rosie.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James S. McGill and Jewel M. McGill. Also, his sister, Connie D. McGill.
In honor of his life, friends and family are invited to attend a funeral service on Sunday February 8, 2026, at 3:00 PM, visitation is from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Held at Newcomer Funeral Home, 3940 Kettering Blvd in Kettering, Ohio.
