Gary Lee Joines, age 80, died on October 14, 2025, in Beaufort, SC. He was born in Fallston, MD in 1944 to Boyde T. and Earl O. Joines. He was predeceased by his brother, Charles E. Joines of Maryland and his sister, Earlene Joines Hora of Washington. He is survived by his son Daniel L. Joines, his daughter Elizabeth E. Kefauver and her husband Kevin, his granddaughter Leah, his grandson Dillon, and his wife, Martha.
He is a graduate of Kennard-Dale High School (1962) Fawn Grove, PA and Pennsylvania State University (1966) where he received a B.S. degree in Agricultural Education. Gary received his Master's Degree in Education from University of Southern California in 1975.
While at Penn State he was in AFROTC and was Commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the Air Force in 1966. He transitioned to the reserves in 1978 as a Captain and retired as a Lt. Co. in 1992. His military decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal in 1978 and the Air Force Commendation Medal in 1974. He was stationed at Eielson A.F. Base, Alaska; Chanute A. F. Base, Illinois; Osan A.F. Base, South Korea; Langley A. F. Base, VA; Hurlbert Field, Florida; and the Pentagon.
After leaving the military, Gary pursued a career in fleet management, working for ConRail, PHH, AmeriGas, and RCN until he fully retired to Fripp Island, SC in 2001. He resided there until 2020 enjoying the beauty of the island and helping his fellow residents until he entered assisted living in Beaufort.
Along with his love of cars, he was a lifelong enthusiast for Penn State sports, especially Penn State football.
There will be a service on Fripp Island on Tuesday, October 28 at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to k9sforwarriors.org, Penn State or a similar charity.
