John Scanlan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by The Island Funeral Home & Crematory on Oct. 14, 2025.
John M. Scanlan of Hilton Head Island, S.C. passed away peacefully on October 12, 2025 from complications due to diabetes.
John was preceded in death by his parents John T. (Jack) and Dorothy J. Scanlan of Stoutsville, Ohio and nephew Jake Scanlan of North Potomac, MD. He is survived by his siblings Jerry (Janet) of North Potomac, MD; Joseph (Minnie Cho) of New York, NY Jeffrey of Baton Rouge, LA; Kathleen Cardwell (David) of Cincinnati, OH; Michael of Maysville, KY: Greg (Bradley Althoff) of St. Paul, MN; and Steve (Nicole Yandell) of Athens, OH; and a nephew and multiple nieces whom he lovingly adored.
A beloved son, brother, and uncle, and loyal friend to many, John was born in Columbus, OH on August 8,1959 and grew up in Stoutsville. After graduating from Logan Elm High School in Circleville, OH John attended The Ohio State University and the Naval Academy Prep School for one year each before persevering in achieving his goal of attending the United States Naval Academy. He graduated in 1983 with the commission of second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps.
John was on active duty in service to his country for twenty years until his retirement at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 2002. His last duty of service was with Marine Aircraft Group 31 based at Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort, SC. He had a decorated career as a Weapons Tactics Instructor and Marine aviator on the F/A-18D Hornet as a Weapons Sensor Operator with deployments taking him around the world, including the Persian Gulf War and Operation Deny Flight during the Balkan War. His commendations included the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and a NATO Medal among others.
In his retirement, John lived life to the fullest. A devout Catholic and man of great faith, he was a parishioner at St. Francis by the Sea in Hilton Head and an active member of the Knights of Columbus Council. He served as Grand Knight for his council and for many years was a fixture of the organization in heading up its annual shrimp boil.
John loved the outdoors, taking annual hiking and cycling trips to state and national parks throughout the country along with numerous adventures on Rails to Trails passageways. He was meticulous in his planning, literally drawing out his maps and logging his journeys via film and a daily journal he kept religiously for decades. Closer to home he could be found in his kayak or as an active volunteer with the Dolphin Project, an organization devoted to conservation of the bottlenose dolphin and the ecosystem they share with us. He participated in many surveys the organization has taken of the dolphin population.
Much of this love of the outdoors harkens back to his youth and growing up in the country on what he has described as an idyllic setting that included a pond to fish in, swim in, or play hockey on, a woods and creek to romp in, a yard plenty big enough for baseball, hills to sled on, and miles of country roads to cycle on.
His life as a Marine and his childhood rearing also served as the muse for John's foray into writing in his retirement. He is the author of two books (Speed Is Life, More Is Better [2004] and Dink-Gadink [2005]) along with stories published in multiple volumes of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series and articles in Good Old Days magazine.
John had a gentle humility and an infectious laugh that paired well with his sense of humor and engaging personality. He died never having owned a cell phone and with film still in his point and shoot camera he took everywhere. Despite his passing he leaves countless smiling faces recalling the many stories he has shared. The fond memories will linger long past his days on this earth.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, October 17 at 10:00 am at St. Francis by the Sea on Hilton Head Island. Visitation will be Thursday, October 16 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at Island Funeral Home. In keeping with John's wishes, the family is currently taking steps for a burial at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in John's honor to The Dolphin Project (https://thedolphinproject.org/), the Rails to Trails Conservancy (https://www.railstotrails.org/), or the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (https://www.nmcrs.org/).

Just heard about John´s passing last night. I have so many wonderful memories growing up with the Scanlons at church and at the KofC hall. I remember how proud my dad was when John made it into the Naval Academy and when he graduated. My very deepest condolences to the whole family and to his dear friends.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Ping... a great Marine Corps officer and one of the most creative and humorous guys you could ever meet. Ping's "Old RIOs Home" skit for a VMFA-212 Hail and Farewell was one for the ages. Rest in Peace brother. Irish

Just hearing now. Condolences to the family. Ping was an amazing person. Met him in VMFA 212 in the 80´s and it is really hard to believe he is gone.

My heart hurts as I learn of this. I served with John, "Ping," in VMFA (AW)-224 in Beaufort in 93-94. We flew together several times, a few times over Bosnia, worked in ops together. Ping was one of four of us who lived in the same tent in Aviano during the Bosnian war- Ping, me, Moe Mahoney, Dozer Snyder.

Ping was a unique character among a profession full of characters. He was unusual in that he had no enemies. Everyone loved and respected him. He was an exceptional WSO and an exceptional person. I´m sure I heard Ping laugh every day during that deployment, even days when a laugh didn´t seem possible.

I don´t think Ping had a bad day in his life. He was born happy, he was one of those people. He always seemed above the "testosterone overloaded" environment in which he lived for 20 years and wrote about. We are all richer who served with him.

Ping you will be sorely missed on earth, but will certainly be entertaining the angels. One of the best WSO´s I ever flew with...a true tactician, teacher and friend.
Fair winds my friend.

Ping was an incredible Squadron Mate! A true Warrior who was a natural Leader. I´ll never forget the day he lived through an Iraqi SAM. He and Cheyenne Bodie flew their Hornet 200 miles back to home plate after absorbing a Surface to Air Missile. Known as the Lancer Judge during a few Kangaroo Courts, Ping was the BEST!

My condolences to the Scanlon family.

I am a USNA `80, 23rd Company grad. So I was one of John´s firsties. We all thought very highly of John. He was a true leader of the 23rd Company Plebes, and I am sure that role continued throughout his remaining 3 years at USNA, and throughout his USMC career!

I haven´t seen John in many years, but I´ll never forget him! Great American!!

I´m just now hearing about Ping´s passing. I´m shocked. And very saddened. John was a pure pleasure to be around. He lit up the entire room wherever he was. I served with him in VMFA-212 in Hawaii and then again in VMFA(AW)-121 during Desert Storm. Soooo many great stories. Will never forget hearing his radio call when he and his pilot took a missile in the tailpipe area. Calm, cool, and collected.

It's so heartwarming to see all the names of people offering their condolences here, people that I have fond memories of as well. My brother John was truly one of the most original people I have ever known, someone who was never caught up in what people might have thought of him but who was always concerned with the well-being of others. I love this picture from last year, when he drove from Hilton Head all the way to Louisville to witness a solar eclipse with my youngest brother and sister-in-law. Peace to all. Thank you for your remembrances and well wishes.
