Gary Lee Keyes of Farmington, NY, the Mayor of Mertensia Rd., died Saturday March 30, 2024 at Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua, NY. He was 81 years old.
Gary was born September 15, 1942 to Ruth A. Keyes and Kenneth W. Keyes in Rochester, NY. He graduated from Victor High School on June 26, 1961 where he participated in student council, the track team, the conference champion football team, and was president of the Future Farmers of America club. On June 14, 1963 he graduated from the Spring Garden Institute in Philadelphia, PA with a two year degree in automotive engineering. On April 15, 1964 he joined the United States Army and served as a turret mechanic in the 33rd Armor Division for two years. After the army he worked briefly for The Gleason Works in Rochester, NY. He married Linda Pringle on November 23, 1971 and opened G. L. Keyes Inc., a small engine, power sports, and bicycle shop, in 1972. In 1974 his first son Aric was born followed by Jason in 1977. Gary and Linda divorced in 1985. He began a relationship with Marilyn Garnsey in 2001 that continued the rest of his life. In 1999 he closed G. L. Keyes Inc. to care for his aging mother.
He continued to be of service to the community through a million good deeds to anyone in need. His house was always open to anyone who wanted to stop by for a cup of coffee and friendly conversation. Gary loved to laugh, whether at a good joke or a grandchild covered in spaghetti. He was tickled by life and helped others around him see the joy and humor in it. To Gary, everyone was "a good egg".
He is survived, and greatly missed, by his two sons, Jason Keyes of Austin, TX, Aric Keyes of Fairport, NY; daughter-in-law Pamela Keyes; two grandsons, Gabriel and Wesley Keyes; and two granddaughters, Lena Korman-Keyes and Beatrice Keyes.
Family and friends are invited to call on FRIDAY, April 12, from 4-7PM at Miller Funeral and Cremation Services of Victor. Burial will be at the Boughton Hill Cemetery in Victor, NY.

Gary gave me my first job as a snowmobile mechanic after years of pestering him for help fixing my own stuff. I went on to technical repair school and have been in the business ever since. He was definitely a huge influence in my life and a great man. God speed GL

Gary is my first cousin, so I have a life-time of memories of our times together. The first photo was taken at the Keyes Dairy Farm where my brother Lawrence (1941) and I (1944) were visiting with our Grandmother Keyes. My Aunt Ruth Keyes is sitting next to Gary. His well-known smile can already be seen in these early photos. Gary inherited his best qualities from both of his parents, Ruth and Kenneth: Dedication to family, work, and community. When I was young, I spent many weeks on their farm and learned so much about the challenges of running a dairy farm. Gary's fascination for all creatures, great and small, helped me to overcome fear of the reptile variety. He was the first and most handsome teenager with whom I learned to dance the twist. He took me to drag races and fairs. Most of all, he always knew how to care and bring joy to my heart. These are the qualities that continue to live on through his amazing sons and grandchildren.
