Gary Lee Laehn, age 79, of Green Bay passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. Born April 14, 1946 in
Shawano, Wi, Gary was the son of the late Herman and Minnie (Duwe) Laehn. Gary was a graduate of Shawano High School with the Class of 1964; he furthered his education with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lakeland College and a Master of Science Degree in Social Work, from the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.
Gary was a social worker for the State of Wisconsin. Throughout his professional career, he worked in Sheboygan, Wood and Clark Counties, working with troubled youth. Gary's final position was the Director for the Clark County Department of Social Services.
Gary was passionate about all types of sports, with a special affinity for long distance running. An avid runner, he completed numerous marathons and long distance races, maintaining high daily mileage well into his 60's and early 70's. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, biking, camping, all outdoor sports with family and friends, and was a Packer and Badger fan. A gifted singer, Gary shared his beautiful voice in many settings. He sang in numerous church choirs and was a sought after soloist for weddings and funerals.
While physically able, Gary was an incredibly generous and helpful resident at the Villa, often seen helping out other residents, as well as giving out hugs, support and encouraging words to anyone in need.
Survivors include his twelve nieces and nephews and their spouses. Alan Schneider (Jacki)Debra Mendy, Jeff Schneider, Kathryn Krueger, William Laehn (Deborah), David Laehn (Sandra), Mary Akey (Richard), Jeannine Geiger (Gregory), Elizabeth Moris (Thomas), Wendi Tomcheck (Brian), Joel Breitrick (Traci), Eugene Breitrick (Crystal). Gary is also survived by his ex-wife Joan Laehn, and by his cherished lifelong best friend, Richard Steinke and his wife Ruth.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents Herman & Minnie Laehn, brother William Laehn and sisters Shirley Schneider, Nancy Laehn, and Carol Breitrick; and In-laws Jean Laehn, George Schneider and Gene Breitrick. He was also preceded in death by his nieces and nephew Toni Derpinghaus, Dawn Meyers and Scott Breitrick.
Per Gary's wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. Gary's remains will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery,
Shawano, WI at a later date. The family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Woodside Villa One staff and Heartland Hospice team for the loving and compassionate care provided to Gary throughout his residency. Your individual attention, love, advocacy and friendship will forever be remembered.
