Gary "Todd" Long 61 passed away peacefully on May 18,2025, in his hometown of Plant City, Florida. Born November 15,1963, he was the son of Pat and Gary Long. He was preceded in death by his mother Pat, whose love and strength greatly influenced his life. He is survived by his significant other Lori Boatright, father Gary Long of Weeki Wachee, Florida, sons Grayson and Creighton Long, sister Teresa Dwyer (Brian) Green of Cove Springs Florida, brother Jerry Long (Vicky) of Washington Courthouse, Ohio and nieces April Pence and Ashley Causey.
A 1981 Graduate of PCHS and a graduate of USF, he received his bachelors degree in education and a masters degree in administration. His passion for sports and his love of the Rays, Bucs, Lightning, and the Gators led him to accept the position as Head Football Coach at Plant City High. He was well respected both as a coach and teacher. His leadership led the team to an undefeated season in 1998. He received a Coach of the Week Award from Buc's Coach, John Gruden, and was also named Coach of the year by the Tampa Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame. He later joined the staff at Durant High School as assistant Principal of Administration where he was respected for his leadership and his ability to inspire both staff and students alike. Todd retired after 35 years due to health concerns.
A man of faith, Todd was an active member of the First Baptist Church, Plant City. His involvement in the community was a testament to his kind nature and his belief in service to others. His love for his family, his pride in his sons and his dedication to the young people he taught and coached was unwavering.
He will be remembered by all who loved him and were touched by his extraordinary life.
A special thanks for the loving care given to Todd by caregivers Lisa Long, Barron Huber and Nancy Beasley.
A celebration of a life well lived will be held on Friday, May 30 at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church, 3309 James L. Redman Parkway, Plant City.

I'm sorry I didn't come to your funeral Mr. Long. When I heard you passed, I was upset. I wish I could've reconnected with you again and shown you I turned out alright. Thank you for giving me those breaks when I was in high school. You weren't my teacher but you are definitely one of my favorites. I'll see you again but not for awhile. #Durant2010

I taught at Durant during Todd's time of service there and always admired his dedication to educating our young people. I was unaware of his health issues, so his death so young was a surprise. I'm sure the many students and co-workers whose lives he touched are thankful to have known him. May God comfort his family in their grief. Thankfully, we know where he is now spending eternity.
