COURTESY OBITUARY
Gary Dorn McFerrin, 86, of Hartfield, Virginia, peacefully passed away on Saturday, January 10, 2026. Gary was born on November 20, 1939, in Lincolnton, Georgia, the son of the late Marion N. and Sallie Mae Myers McFerrin. Gary spent his professional life as a dedicated home and apartment builder, a career that spanned most of his years in the Hampton Roads and Middle Peninsula areas. When he wasn’t building foundations of the community, Gary could be found tending to his garden, perfecting his swing on the golf course, or peacefully casting a line into the water. Above all, his greatest joys came from spending cherished time with his family and loyal animal companions. His family will always remember how much they were loved and cherished, as well as his sense of humor and wisdom. In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by his son, Gary D. McFerrin, Jr. (Robin), siblings Marion "Billy" McFerrin (Maddie), Thomas McFerrin (Cleo), Allen McFerrin (Bobbie), Donnie McFerrin (Jean), Shirley Goldman (Racy), and Vivian Wright (Gene). He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ruth V. McFerrin, daughters Gloria Bauer (David) and Sandra Cooke (Todd); his grandchildren, Kevin Bauer, Eric Bauer (Emily), Trey McFerrin, Colin McFerrin, and Christina Penick (William); great-granddaughter Madelyn Bauer, Siblings, Tracy McFerrin (Joanna), Gloucester, VA, Helen “Becky” McClain (George), McCormick, SC and numerous nieces and nephews. At his request, services will be private. In memory of our loved one, memorial contributions may be made to Gloucester Mathews Humane Society, PO Box 385, Gloucester, VA 23061.
