Gary Wayne Moats, 67, passed away on Thursday, November 6, 2025, at his residence in Verona.
He was born on October 17, 1958, in Harrisonburg to the late Edward Albert and Bertha Mae Ober Moats.
Gary loved camping, working with his hands, and spending time in the woods. He could often be found watching deer, especially his pet deer, “Daniel”.
A natural tinkerer, Gary, could work on just about anything with wheels or an engine. He loved his son’s motorcycle, even though he never had one of his own. He never missed a chance to talk about machines, tools, or anything that ran on gas. He had a soft spot for animals, especially dogs and cats, but more than anything, Gary loved spending time with his family.
Gary spent his career in the construction industry working as a heavy equipment operator.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Winifred Borrell Moats; his son, Steven Wayne Moats and his wife, Brittany Elaine; his brothers, Albert Edward Moats and his wife, Hilda and Jerry Lee Moats and his wife, Susan; and his sisters, Linda Mae Moats Hurt and her husband, George, Stella Louise Moats Howdyshell and her husband, Elmer, and Wanda Gail Moats Blankenship and her husband, Donnie; numerous nieces and nephews and was known to them as the “favorite uncle”.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Jessie Marie Moats Simmons.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton with Chaplain Stephen Henderson officiating.
The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service, beginning at 12:00 PM.
