Gary Poltonowicz Obituary

Visit the Lutz Funeral Home, Inc. - Reading website to view the full obituary.

Gary L. Poltonowicz, affectionately known as Garybear, Pumpkin, or simply Poppop, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2026, in the Reading Hospital. He was the husband of Mary V. (Trexler) for 27 years. Born on August 29, 1956, in Bristol, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Edward and Julia (Dorusak) Poltonowicz. Gary grew into the kind of man who made every room brighter simply by walking into it. Gary lived a full and joyful life, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, warmth, and genuine friendship.

In addition to his wife Mary, Gary is survived by his children; Gary Poltonowicz Jr (Kristan), David Miller, Sharen Tassone (Franco), Heather Miller, and Joshua Miller. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Gary was preceded in death by his grandson Joshua Miller Jr.

A proud graduate of Bristol Borough High School, Gary continued his education at Bloomsburg University where he earned his bachelor’s degree, later achieving his master’s at West Chester University. His work ethic and passion for people led him to become the owner of Suburban Tavern Restaurant & Cigar Lounge, a place that reflected his larger-than-life spirit perfectly. Whether it was greeting regulars with a laugh or welcoming first-timers like old friends, Gary's warmth and easygoing charm made everyone feel at home. He had a gift for connection, and nobody left his presence without a smile.

Gary’s life was beautifully shared with his beloved Mary where together they built a home filled with laughter, love, and countless memories. He was a man who found joy in the simple things in life. Hanging with friends, smoking a fine cigar, and celebrating "Whisk(e)y Wednesdays" were among his favorite traditions. Family meant everything to him, and some of his happiest moments were spent sharing night swims with his grandchildren and great grandchildren and soaking up the sun alongside his wife and family on their yearly trip to Aruba. He and Mary cherished their annual trips to Aruba and had been eagerly anticipating their next chapter of travel together in retirement.

He will be deeply missed by Mary, his entire family and by all others who were lucky enough to know him. His kindness, humor, and ability to make every moment brighter will remain a lasting gift to those he loved.

A visitation to celebrate Gary’s life will be held on Friday, March 6, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at Lutz Funeral Home, Inc., 2100 Perkiomen Avenue, Reading, PA 19606. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Society.

Though lightly religious, Gary believed in the peace of the next journey and the importance of cherishing the one we have. In his own words, “Don’t be sad that it’s over, be glad that it happened.” Now, go light one up and pour a nice glass of bourbon.
