Gary Retzlaff Obituary

Published by Legacy on Oct. 1, 2025.
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Gary Retzlaff, who passed away peacefully at the age of 66 on August 3, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born and raised in Wisconsin, Gary eventually made Arizona his home-but no matter where he lived, he carried with him a deep sense of loyalty, humility, and quiet strength. He lived a life grounded in character, selflessness, and an unwavering commitment to doing right by the people he loved.
Gary proudly served with the Department of Corrections, dedicating years of his life to public service. His strength, compassion, and no-nonsense integrity earned him the respect of both colleagues and inmates alike. He never asked for recognition-he simply showed up, did the hard work, and left things better than he found them.
Known for his humor, steady presence, and protective spirit, Gary had a sharp wit and a big heart. He loved classic rock, Pall Mall cigarettes, cherry ChapStick, Diet Coke, and making people laugh with his signature one-liners and well-timed jokes. He didn't need the spotlight to leave a lasting impression- his presence spoke volumes.
He is survived by his six children Samantha Leonard, Marissa Herrguth, Kacie DiMarco, Andrew Retzlaff, Matthew Retzlaff, and Makenna Retzlaff-whom he loved deeply and supported fiercely. He also held immense admiration for his grandchildren-Savannah, Kylie, Madilyn, Hadley, and Luca-who brought him endless pride and joy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon Retzlaff and Celeste Keup.
"A quiet man of strong character leaves behind an echo that never fades."
