A dedicated public servant, Gary devoted 30 years to the Stark County Sheriffs Department. He started in the Explorer Program in 1977, and earned the rank of Captain until his retirement in 2011. Following his commendable service, he continued to contribute to his community by working with the Football HOF, the Head of Security for the Canton Charge, and as a Ranger for the Stark County Parks, where he further showcased his love for nature and the great outdoors.

He was an alumnus of Glen Oak High School, where he laid the foundation for his future accomplishments. Gary later graduated from the prestigious Quantico FBI Academy in Virginia, a testament to his commitment to excellence and service in law enforcement.

Gary was a man characterized by his deep love for family and friends. He shared a loving, adventurous life with his long-time partner, Carol Zimbello, whose companionship brought him immense joy. He is also survived by his brothers, William (Ellen) Shankle and Ronald (Linda) Shankle, and sisters Carol Shankle and Paula (Rob) Vollmer. Gary's warmth and kindness extended to many, including dear friend Elizabeth Zimbello. He will be remembered fondly by a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, all of whom were touched by his generous spirit and quick wit. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Paul R. Shankle and Rachael Shankle, and his beloved cat, BD.

The legacy that Gary leaves behind is one of dedication, love, and compassion. He was a defender of the defenseless. He will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.
