Gary Sluder Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Samaritan Affordable Funeral and Cremation Services - Terre Haute on Feb. 2, 2026.
Gary "Mike" Sluder, AKA: The BIG BIG Man of Lyons – formerly of Leicester N.C., went MIA for the second and final time, at the ripe young age of 70 after one heck of a battle with every illness known to man. Oddly enough, it was his biggest attribute that took him out. His heart couldn't take another day of the endless love he received.

Throughout his life he wore many hats, mostly sideways. He was an Army veteran (we think), a master story teller (mostly embellished), a paint and body man, but mostly just the best Dad, Papaw, uncle, loved one, brother, and friend. He loved anything there was to do outdoors, particularly hunting and fishing, even though all he caught was bait. He loved to pick his guitar, tune into Gunsmoke, and was a real history buff, but his favorite was spending time with his family, around a fire or sitting on a porch telling stories.

He is survived by his 3 kids: Gold, Silver, and Aluminum – also known as Jenny (Rod) Page, Jessica (Hunter) Fyffe, and Michael (Holly) Sluder. These 3 kids somehow managed to give him the title he loved the best…Papaw. He was blessed (possibly?) with 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grands. His grands were much better liked than his kids – rightfully so. He is also survived by his only brother and best friend, Kenny Sluder of GA. His 2 sisters: Karen (Tommy) Buckner of NC, Melissa Sluder of SC, and numerous nieces and nephews.

All joking aside, Mike could make you laugh on your darkest days, make you mad as a wet hen on your best, and had a knack for making you feel loved always. He will be eternally missed and deeply loved.

In a sincere effort to maintain Mike's wishes, cremation was chosen and no formal services will take place. In memory of Mike, Dad, Papaw, please make a donation to the charity of your choice.
