Gary Smith Obituary

Gary was born in Dayton, OH in 1947. The only child of Milton and BettyJane Smith, he grew up in Hagerstown, MD where he met his high school sweetheart turned wife of 57 years, Jan (Bame) Smith. He repaired military instruments in the US Army during his tour of two winters in Fairbanks, Alaska where he developed his love of the outdoors and cold weather. He was known for sleeping outside on the coldest nights of the year.
Gary is survived by his wife, Jan (Bame) Smith, son Patrick Smith (Elita) of Alexandria, VA, and daughter, Karie Byerly (Adam), and three grandchildren: Emma, Benjamin, and Andrew Byerly of Grand Junction, Colorado.
A celebration of life will be held at 2:00pm on October 11, 2025 at First Presbyterian Church, 116 S Loudon St, Winchester, VA.
