Gary Wilbert Smith, 72, passed away on December 1, 2025 in St. Joseph, Missouri. Born on December 31, 1952 in Batesville, Arkansas, Gary was a man of dedication and service. He attended Cave City High School before continuing his education at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas. From an early age, he demonstrated a strong work ethic, helping his father haul milk before embarking on a distinguished military career. Gary proudly served in the United States Army for 20 years, earning recognition for his commitment to emergency services in Arkansas with three ribbons. His service took him across the country, where he traveled to numerous battlefields in the U.S., deepening his appreciation for history. A passionate scholar of civil war history, he spent countless hours reading and exploring the past.

Beyond his military career, Gary was deeply involved in fraternal organizations. He was a Free Mason and a 32nd-degree Scottish Rite Mason, as well as a Shriner. His dedication to these organizations reflected his values of loyalty and service to others. In later years, he converted to Catholicism and took his faith seriously, finding great meaning in his spiritual journey.

Music was one of Gary's greatest joys. A talented guitarist, he spent years traveling across the United States sharing his love for music with others. His sense of humor and warm personality made him a beloved presence wherever he went. He also found fulfillment in working with children over the years, and took great pride in making a positive impact on young lives.

Gary is survived by his wife, Gemma of Saint Joseph, his children, Brooke Sutterfield, (Randy) of Pleasant Plains, Arkansas, Taylor Smith of Batesville, Arkansas, two step children, Jeremy Jagow (Vanessa) Saint Joseph, and Laura Jagow-Helton (Zach) Saint Joseph, 2 cherished grandchildren, Brittney and Sara Sutterfield of Pleasant Plains, and brother, Michael Smith of Arkansas. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Vera Rose and W.N. Smith, as well as his son, Garrett Smith.

Gary's legacy is one of dedication-to his family, his country, his faith, and the many passions that shaped his life. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to the Gary Smith Memorial Fund in care of the Rupp Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life is planned for a later date
