Gary was born January 12, 1940 in Minneapolis, MN the son of Orton and Donna Thomton.
He was raised and educated in Minneapolis and Bemidji; graduating Bemidji High School in 1958. He lived and worked in Bemidji, Excelsior, MN, and Mound, MN working as a skilled carpenter. He married Paula Swenson March 28, 2001 in Taos, NM. He was very proud of his Habitat for Humanity Award. He loved building and designing furniture. He was a motorcycle enthusiast.
He is survived by his wife, Paula Swenson, children, Teri (Bill) Nygaard, Eric (Allison Sherer) Thomton, and Mike Thomton, step-daughter, Katie O'Connor, and 5 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Christine.
