Gary Watson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Angels Cremation Center - Bakersfield on Feb. 4, 2026.
Gary Laverne Watson passed away at home in Bakersfield on February 2, 2026, at the age of 81. He was born on December 14, 1944, in Spokane, Washington, and lived a life marked by steadfast faith, loyalty, and fun.

Gary is survived by his wife, Sue Watson; his sons, Mario Watson and Gary Watson Jr., and their families; his stepchildren, Elizabeth Hellen and Ivan Mtsweni, along with their partners, several grandchildren and one great-grandchild. His family was an important part of his life.

Gary was self-employed as an auto body shop owner for many years. He took pride in making things look better and building lasting relationships with the people he served.

In his free time, Gary enjoyed cars, boats, and buses, a good cup of coffee, listening to music, and moments of quiet reflection. He loved fixing things and could often be found working at his garage bench, cleaning up the patio, or tending to his cacti and succulents. He had a special heart for animals, people in need of a second chance, and the beauty of nature. His faith was central to his life, and he found comfort and purpose in sharing it with others.

Gary will be remembered for his larger-than-life personality, his many stories of growing up in the San Fernando Valley, hitchhiking to Texas, and dirt biking in the desert with his sons. He had an innate ability to make people laugh, a gift he carried with him to the end of his life.

A Celebration of Life will be held in his honor on February 28, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Buena Vista Road, Bakersfield. Light snacks and beverages will be served following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Gary's memory to ADAKC (Alzheimer's Disease Association of Kern County) in Bakersfield, supporting families and individuals affected by dementia and related illnesses.

Gary's memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him.
