Gary Whiting Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lohman Funeral Home Port Orange on Jun. 19, 2025.
Gary Michael Whiting November 14, 1951 – June 11, 2025
Gary Michael Whiting, affectionately known as "Papa," passed away peacefully on June 11, 2025, surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was 73.
Born November 14, 1951, in Winsted, Connecticut, Gary was the beloved son of Grace M. (DiMartino) Whiting and Alfred Whiting. He is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Laurie Ann (Simmons) Whiting.
Gary was a dedicated member of the Winsted Fire Department for over 23 years and served with the Fire Police before relocating to Florida. He was an active member of the Redmans Club and the Winsted Elks Lodge. A lifelong baseball enthusiast and die-hard Yankees fan, Gary gave back to the sport by coaching Little League and American Legion baseball. He also spent time coaching Midget Football in Winsted, CT.
Gary built a successful career in the flooring industry, beginning as a salesman and advancing to become a representative for several carpet mills. His final and longest-tenured role was with Mohawk Industries, where he cultivated lifelong friendships.
In retirement, Gary found joy on the golf course with his Tuesday league at Cypress Head Golf Course in Port Orange, FL. where he formed many lasting friendships.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Allan Whiting, his mother and father-in-law Kay and George Simmons.
In addition to his wife Laurie, Gary is survived by his children: Bobbi-Jo Phelps-West, Jamie Whiting (Meredith), and Matthew Whiting (Heather). His grandchildren include Tommy Wosyluk, Lizzy Luginbuhl (Kyle), Taylor Girola (Gino), Garrett Phelps, Tylar Whiting, Emma West, Isabella Whiting, and Will Whiting. He was blessed with two great-grandchildren, Luca and Leo Girola.
Gary is also survived by his sister Karen Roy and brother-in-law GeGe Roy, sister-in-law Debbie Whiting, brothers-in-law James Simmons (Sarah) and Bob Simmons (Terry), as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
Gary was a bright light in the lives of those around him. Known for his kindness, attentiveness, and uncanny ability to remember every name and face, he touched countless hearts. He was immensely proud of his family and never missed a chance to share stories about his children and grandchildren. His greatest joy came from being surrounded by those he loved most.
He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held at Lohman Funeral Home on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at 3:00 PM, located at 1201 Dunlawton Avenue, Port Orange, Florida 32127. Burial will take place in Connecticut at the Winchester Center Cemetery at a later date.

Rod & I are truly sorry to hear about Gary´s passing. Gary was our Mohawk/Karastan rep for many years. He was a great rep. He always laughed or joked each time he stopped by. And he loved telling about his family.
Rest in Peace Gary!!
