Mr. Augustus Eugene "Gene" Ayers, age 91, of Commerce, GA died Tuesday, August 20, 2024 at his residence. Mr. Ayers was born in Commerce to the late John W. and Roxie Inez Smallwood Ayers. He was a veteran of the United States Army and a member of Sandy Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Ayers was retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation.
Mr. Ayers is survived by his wife, Patricia "Pat" Howington Ayers of Commerce; sons, David Ayers (Loretta) of Nicholson and Chris Ayers (Lynn) of Benbrook, TX; and granddaughter, Ansley Ayers.
Funeral services will be at 2 PM, Saturday, August 24 at the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home with Rev. Crist Camden and Rev. Don McKelvey officiating. Interment will follow in Howington Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 5 to 7 PM.
Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce is in charge of arrangements.

Gene was a wonderful man that i had the pleasure of working with for several years. He was known as "Mr. Asphalt" due to his extensive knowledge of paving our roadways. He was dedicated, hardworking & loyal. More than anything else, Gene was a good man.
