John Eugene Davis was born Tuesday, October 3, 1933 at Pine Creek, Oklahoma to George Reeves Davis and Agnes Leona (Browning) Davis. Gene passed from this life on Saturday, November 25, 2023 in Colbert, Oklahoma at the age of 90.
Gene grew up in Mound Grove, Oklahoma where he was taught by his mom in a one-room school house and his dad owned and operated the general store as well as being a rancher/businessman. Gene graduated from Valliant School in 1950, and would attend and graduate from Southeastern in 1956. Gene married his sweetheart, Glenda Bailey, on October 10, 1953. Gene served 33 years with the Army National Guard retiring as a Colonel. He coached for 7 decades in Oklahoma and Texas at the high school and collegiate level. Gene is a Hall of Fame member of the Oklahoma Coaches Association, as well as inducted in the Oklahoma Basketball Coaches Association, and was a National Finalist for Coach of the Year. He was an accomplished winner on the court and mentor to many of his players.
Gene was a proud dad to his 3 children that are also educators. He loved the Professional Bull Riding, Oklahoma Sooners, Texas Rangers, and Dallas Cowboys. He enjoyed being with family and friends and having get-togethers. He also enjoyed reading, being outdoors tending to his cattle, and was a big storyteller. Gene and Glenda are members of the Hwy 91 Church of Christ in Colbert.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, George 'Sonny man' Winfred Davis and his wife, Alene Davis.
Gene leaves behind his wife of 70 years, Glenda; daughters Terry Davis Floyd and her husband, Mark of Cartwright, OK, and Darlene Davis of Colbert; a son, Rod Davis and his wife, Brenda of Pine Creek, OK; grandchildren Colt Floyd and Lauren Shields, Easton and Zoe Cardenas, Logan Davis (Sarah), Crystal Lopez (Juston), Stephen Clark (Ashley), Stephanie Colter (Nathan), and Shalan Prince (Wesley); great-grandchildren Ethan, Trevor, Alicia, Farrah, Kinsler, Kennedy, Collin, Chandler, Brady, Bryant, Berkley, Lawson, Landi, Ryker, and Rogan; a sister-in-law Shirley Sutton and her daughter, Dearla and husband Bobby; nieces Shari Julian and husband Bruce, Melanie Davis and her daughter Desarae; and nephew Ants Gus Davis.
A Celebration of Life services for Coach Davis will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at the Colbert High School gymnasium with Dr. Jim Mitchell officiating. Gene will be laid to rest at Valliant Cemetery in Valliant, Oklahoma with Cody Jones, Logan Davis, Colt Floyd (Trevor), Easton Cardenas (Kinsler), Ethan Floyd, Collin Lopez, Chandler Lopez, and Stephen Clark serving as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Tex Rawlins, Alvie Nelson, Keith Luna, Bill Wilson, Steve Hudson, Mike Thompson, Wayne Cobb, Clyde Smith, Ryan Woolsey, Javar Lewis, and Maurice Rutherford.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM on Tuesday, November 28, at Brown's Funeral Home in Durant.
Full military honors will be performed at the gravesite.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to be mailed to the Oklahoma Coaches Association Benefit Plan 8080 Crystal Park Drive Oklahoma City, OK 73139.

Gene helped me so much through the years. I am very grateful for the time he invested in me as a coach and educator. I was able to learn so much from him. I just found out about his passing today. I would have been at the celebration of life service had I known. He was a special mentor for me and I will forever remember Gene and his influence on my life.
