Eugene Charles Donner, 83, of
Sullivan, MO and known affectionately as Gene to his many friends and loved ones, passed away on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at Mercy Hospital in
Washington, MO. Born on August 21, 1942, in
Nevada, MO, to Leo and Veronica Donner, Gene's early years were spent in
St. Clair, MO, where he grew up and completed his education. His life was marked by a steadfast commitment to his family, country, and community, which was evident in every chapter of his story.
Gene's journey of service began when he entered the United States Army in 1960. He served with honor and dedication until his discharge in 1963, a period of his life that shaped the man he would become. Returning to St. Clair, he embarked on a new chapter at Chrysler Corp., where he established a career that would span over three decades. His work ethic and leadership qualities led him to a supervisory role, from which he retired in 1996, leaving behind a legacy of respect and admiration.
In 1976, Gene married Paula Hardwick, with whom he welcomed two children, Melissa and Matthew. The family laid down roots in the Argo area near Japan in 1983, where Gene built his farm and they raised their family. The couple later divorced.
Gene's life blossomed when he met Marjorie Homeyer, who became the love of his life. Their marriage on June 3, 2000, was a union of hearts that lasted over a quarter of a century. Marjorie brought with her a daughter, Cindy, and together, Gene and Marjorie crafted a life rich in shared experiences, from camping trips to playing cards, to reveling in the joys of their grandchildren's sporting events. As members of the Eagles Post #3781, they found fellowship and purpose.
Retirement did not slow Gene down; he continued to work alongside his brother, Stanley, in construction. His industrious spirit was matched by his passion for the outdoors. Gene loved tending to his garden, raising cattle, and engaging in the camaraderie of bowling leagues and horseshoe competitions. His love for fishing and hunting provided him not just with recreation, but with moments of reflection and connection with his grandchildren.
Gene's life was a testament to transformation, as he found faith in the Lord and solace while attending New Testament Baptist Church early in the 2000s. His spiritual journey enriched his life and provided him with a sense of peace and community. Those who knew Gene understood that beneath his tough exterior was a tender-hearted man, generous, loving, and always ready to lend a helping hand or share a word of encouragement.
Gene is survived by his loving wife, Marjorie; his children, Matt Donner and wife, Melissa of
Sullivan, MO and Cindy Holdmeyer and husband, Paul of
