Gene A. Huntington, 84, of Dillsboro passed away at 2:35 p.m., Saturday, August 16, 2025 at Autumn Trace in North Vernon. He was born in Friendship on February 17, 1941, the son of Wilkie and Lulu Uhlman Huntington. He married Harriet Sue Biddle on November 30, 1963 and she survives. Other Survivors include two daughters Gena (Roger) Gullion of Dewberry and Gennie (Chris) Grider of North Vernon; five grandchildren Kevin Gullion of Auburn, Justin Gullion of Madison, Megan (Vince) Davis of Holton, Mariah (Ian) Martin of Freetown, and Jake Grider of North Vernon; one great-granddaughter Paisley Bennett. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Larry and Jerome. Mr. Huntington was a 1960 graduate of Cross Plains High School. On October 3, 1966 Gene entered the US Army serving as a Staff Sergeant with the Third US Army Infantry in Vietnam. For service to his country Gene received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Bronze Star Medal, and two Overseas Service Bars. He was awarded two Purple Hearts for wounds received in battle on two separate occasions. Gene was discharged from the service on October 2, 1968 to begin his working career in civilian life. He was employed with H. R. Corson Chevrolet in Friendship and spent 31 years with the Cummins Engine Company as an engine operator. He retired from their affiliate Holset in Madison in 1994 where he worked in maintenance. After his retirement he worked as a groundskeeper for the NMLRA in Friendship. Gene enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, and following NASCAR. He was a member of the Northcutt Laaker American Legion Post 292 in Dillsboro and also the NMLRA. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 23 at 12 p.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Sherman Hughes officiating. Burial will be in the Akers Friendship Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Visitation will also be on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. Memorials may be given to the St. Croix Hospice in Seymour or the Versailles American Legion in care of the funeral home.

Gene was a fun guy to be around - I enjoyed playing golf with him. He always teased me! I made him cinnamon rolls for Christmas . He will be missed. Sympathy to his family & friends!
