Retired Master Sergeant Gene Hardy Payne
January 7, 1935 – February 16, 2026
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Retired Master Sergeant Gene Hardy Payne, who departed this life on February 16, 2026, at the age of 91.
Gene Hardy Payne - affectionately known as "GP" and lovingly called "Pooh" by his beloved wife - was born on January 7, 1935, in
Del Rio, Texas. A man of strength, discipline, and unwavering devotion to his family and country, Gene lived a life marked by honor, sacrifice, and service.
Gene's military career was marked by dedication, leadership, and exceptional service. Drafted into the United States Army in 1957, he served until 1959 and was recalled to active duty during the Berlin Crisis in 1961. Rising through the ranks, Gene retired in 1985 as a Master Sergeant, having distinguished himself as a Drill Sergeant who mentored countless soldiers.
While all of Gene's commendations reflect his dedication and service, the Bronze Star Medal and the Gallantry Cross Unit Citation with Palm stand out as particularly prestigious due to their association with valor and exceptional performance in combat or wartime conditions.
Gene was united in marriage to the love of his life, Marlene Fayetta Payne, on March 10, 1962. Together they shared 63 years of marriage, building a life rooted in faith, family, and unwavering devotion. Their union was one of enduring love and partnership until her passing on November 21, 2025.
Gene's dedication to excellence began early. He attended Tarver High School, graduating as Valedictorian in 1953. He continued his education at Huston-Tillotson College, majoring in Business Administration with a minor in Economics. Following his military service, he furthered his studies at Cameron University, majoring in General Education and Sociology.
After retiring from the military, Gene remained deeply committed to mentoring and guiding youth. He worked as a Group Leader for Treasure Lake Job Corps, where he helped shape the futures of many young people. He later worked - and continued to volunteer - at Bishop Elementary School, investing his time, wisdom, and leadership into future generations.
Gene was a faithful and devoted member of Cache Road Baptist Church in Lawton, Oklahoma, where he served faithfully in various capacities. His faith was a guiding force throughout his life and a foundation for how he lived and led.
He was also a dedicated and well-respected member of the Lawton–Fort Sill Golf Association and The Gideons International.
He found great joy on the golf course, in the kitchen preparing meals for loved ones, and most of all in spending cherished time with his family.
Those who knew Gene often spoke of his generous heart. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, never hesitating to give his time, wisdom, or support. He was a born leader - a man people naturally looked to for strength, guidance, and integrity.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents Wallace Walter Payne, Helen Barry , beloved wife, Marlene Fayetta Payne, his son, Gene Payne Jr. and granddaughter Tanique Williams .
He leaves to cherish his memory his children: Audrey Bean (
Spencer, OK), Richard Miller (
Lawton, OK), Darrel Miller and his wife Mary (Lawrenceville, NJ), Roderick Perry and his wife Kathryn (Katy, TX), and Katrice Lynnette Payne (Richmond, TX); his sister, Dorothy L. Burns (Columbus, OH).
His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Celeste Ingram (Casper), Darrah Miller, Dayon Payne (Alaysia), Devyn Mack, Aryssa Dane, Kameron Dane, Roderick Perry Jr., Patrick Perry, Jaycee Perry, Madison Perry, and Peyton Perry.
