Genelle Childress Berry, of Sugar Land Texas, died surrounded by her family on April 15, 2024. She was born July 28, 1940, in
San Angelo, Texas, the first child of the late Mary Geniece Childress and Pleas Leasel Childress II of
Ozona, Texas. The eldest of four, Genelle grew up loving to roller skate and act in school productions.
Graduating with honors from Ozona High School, she went on to attend Pine Manor College in
Boston, Massachusetts, studying literature and art where she was the voted May Queen. During her time in New England, she met Ronald Lewis Berry while carpooling to church, her husband of forty-nine years. They married at the First Baptist Church in
Ozona, Texas, followed by a backyard reception at her childhood home. Ron and Genelle moved to
Austin, Texas after marriage, both attending the University of Texas. Genelle completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in English and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Her husband, Ron, enjoyed a thirty-three year career at NASA, in aeronautical engineering, residing in Dickenson, Nassau Bay and Clear Lake, Texas.
The mother of four children, Cynthia Childress Berry, Catherine Geniece Berry, Ronald Lewis Berry Jr., and Elizabeth Anne Berry, she lived much of her life as a homemaker and part time art teacher. She was an active member of the Junior League of Texas. She and her family were also members of Webster Presbyterian Church. Later in life, she completed her Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at University of Houston, Clear Lake and worked at St. Joseph's Hospital. Genelle was an avid reader and will be remembered for her thoughtfulness, generosity and ability to step-up in a crisis.
She is survived by daughter, Cindy Ollig and her husband Alex and son Max of
Denver, CO; her daughter, Catherine Berry and her husband David Hamburger and children Milo and Annabelle of
Austin, TX; her son, Ron Berry Jr. of
Austin, TX; her daughter, Elizabeth Anne Berry and numerous other loving family members and relations; And three siblings, Pleas Leasel Childress III, Lucille Elizabeth Huff, and Charles Grady Childress.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, April 22, 2024 at Austin Memorial Cemetery in
Austin, Texas.
