Geneva Hunter was a gentle gift to all who knew her. Faithful Christian, devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, artisan quilter, and skilled domino master (we teased her that she was outlawed in 17 states). She played dominoes at her beloved Senior Citizen's Center on Tuesday and the next day, on April 19, she had a health event and passed away and is in the presence of God, Dad, and her youngest child James Paul.
Geneva married at 16, just at the end of the Korean War. Bride of Bobby Hunter, an army radar technician, almost 10 years his junior. She wanted off the farm and as far from
Whiteface, Texas, as possible. So, she jumped at the chance. After marriage, she finished high school by correspondence. (It was before the days of the GED) Just shy of her 18th birthday; her first child was born. She never got very far from that farm, for her army husband traded his uniform for a tractor. For the rest of her life, she lived less than 20 miles from the farm of her youth.
Through the years she gave birth to five children, including a set of twins, one of which died. When her youngest reached school age, she pursued her dream to attend college. She wanted to be a nurse. To make sure of her career choice, she worked six months in the local county hospital as an aid, emptying bedpans and changing linens. She was sure of her dream, so nursing education began.
Junior College continued with 4 school age children at home. Getting them off to school, driving 30 miles to the campus, taking the nursing class load, returning home to attend to the needs of a farming family made for very long days. She towed all four kids to church every week, even when they didn't want to go. She graduated from college. She became the nurse she dreamed of being.
She wasn't through, though. As she continued to raise her children, and send them one by one off to college, she went back to school again. Upgrading her LVN for RVN, and next hospital administration certificates. Twenty years went by to find her the Administrator in Cochran County of that first hospital where she worked emptying those bedpans. While she would go on to finish her nursing career in ER work in Lubbock, the full circle of her life and calling is an inspiration to all who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her son, James Paul Hunter, and her husband, Bobby Hunter.
She is survived by her other four children and their families: Daughter Belinda and husband Sam Gibson, granddaughter Samantha and husband Rev. Andrew Fortenberry and great grandson Canyon Fortenberry, grandson Gates and wife Jen Gibson. Son Rev. Dr. Tully and wife Ann Hunter, grandson Alex Hunter and granddaughter Emma Hunter. Son Joe and wife Angel Hunter, grandson Tyler Hunter. Son Rev. Mike and wife Enid Hunter, granddaughter Micah James, great-grandson Oden James, and great-granddaughter Zoey James, granddaughter Cameron and husband Jessie Seale, great-granddaughter Cadence Seale and great-grandson Xander Seale.
Services will be at First Missionary Baptist Church of Morton with graveside to follow. The family asks that in lieu of flowers you support the two organizations that were central to her life: First Missionary Baptist Church of Morton, TX, and the Cochran County Senior Citizens Center.
